Capture the Snitch


One player from each team, Slytherin and Gryffindor, steps into the playing area. The player from Gryffindor (a Seeker) tries to grab a ball (the Snitch) from the center of the playing area and run to the outside of the playing area with it to score a point for the Gryffindor team. The player from Slytherin tries to protect the Snitch and tag the player from Gryffindor to score a point for the Slytherin team.

What You'll Need:

  • A Tennis Ball (or other small ball)
  • Tape or Spray paint


Using tape or spray paint, mark a playing area in the grass which is at least 20' by 20'. Designate two starting lines at opposite ends of the field.

At the Party:

Divide the children into two equal teams; tell one team that they're Slytherins and the other team that they're Gryffindors. Have each team stand behind their own starting line. Place the ball, representing the Snitch, in the center of the playing field.

To start the game, one player from the Slytherin group steps onto the playing field to guard the Snitch. A "Seeker" from Gryffindor also steps onto the field to try to capture the Snitch and take it off the field. The Seeker tries to entice the Slytherin player into a chase that will lead him or her away from the Snitch by weaving, dodging, looking bored, etc. The Seeker must then try to run to the center of the field, grab the Snitch, and run back across the Gryffindor start line without being tagged. If successful, the Gryffindor team gets one point. If the Slytherin player tags the Seeker at any point, the Slytherin team gets one point.

After the first round, place the Snitch back in the center of the field, have both players return to their corresponding sides of the field, and have two new players step onto the field. Play enough rounds so that everyone is on the field at least once. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!

Alternative - If the playing area is large enough, you may wish to let 2 or more children from each team play on the field at one time. This would add a teamwork element to the game and make the game more interesting, especially for older children.
