Piggy Cake

Make a Piggy Cake using round cake pans and our recipe (below), your own recipe, or your favorite cake mix. Then, decorate it to look like our illustration.

What You'll Need to Make Our Piggy Cake:

  • A Copy of Our Piggy Cake Pattern
  • 3/4 Cup of Softened Butter (salted or unsalted, depending on your preference)
  • 1 1/21/2 Cups of Granulated Sugar
  • 4 Large Eggs
  • 2 Teaspoons of Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup of Milk
  • Optional: 1/8 Cup of Almond, Orange, Lemon, or Other Flavored Extract
  • Optional: Several Drops of Red Food Coloring (for a pink cake)
  • 3 Cups of Flour
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon of Baking Powder
  • 2 Round Cake Pans
  • A Whisk or Electric Mixer
  • A Spatula
  • Shortening or Extra Butter (to grease your pans)
  • A Plate or Serving Platter
  • Wax Paper
  • Pink Frosting
  • 1 1/2 Snowball Snack Cakes (found in grocery stores) or Cupcake Tops
  • M&Ms or Skittles

How to Make Our Piggy Cake:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally as you mix.
  3. Slowly beat the eggs, vanilla extract and milk into the butter and sugar mixture. If you are adding an additional flavored extract and/or red food coloring, mix them in, too.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the baking powder, salt and flour.
  5. Mix the sifted dry ingredients in with the wet ingredients a little bit at a time, and continue mixing until all of the ingredients are well-blended.
  6. Grease the two round baking pans using the shortening or extra butter, then flour them lightly. Gently tap out the excess flour.
  7. Pour the batter equally into the two greased and floured cake pans.
  8. Bake the cakes for approximately 30 minutes, or until they pass the "toothpick test."
  9. Let the cakes cool in their pans on a baking rack for at least 15 minutes, then turn them out and let them cool completely before icing them.
  10. Place strips of wax paper around the edges of a plate or serving platter. This will keep the platter clean while you ice the cake.
  11. Set one of the cakes on the wax paper-covered platter and ice the top of it with the pink frosting. Tip: If you're using store-bought frosting, whip it for a few minutes to loosen it up and make it easier to spread over the cake. You can also dip your spreading spatula in warm water before smoothing out the frosting.
  12. Add the second cake layer to the first and ice the entire cake, then carefully remove the wax paper.
  13. Cut one of the Snowball snack cakes/cupcake tops in half. Cut one of the halves in half again to create ears. Place these a few inches apart at the top of the cake, as shown above.
  14. Add two blue or green M&Ms or Skittles for eyes.
  15. Create a snout by setting the whole Snowball/cupcake top below the candy eyes. If necessary, frost it pink to match the rest of the cake. Add two darker M&Ms or Skittles as nostrils.
  16. Create a semi-circle mouth below the snout using red M&Ms or Skittles.
  17. Voila! You have a Piggy Cake!
