Decorating & Food Ideas

70s Disco Party Decoration Ideas Set aside a place for a disco floor and crank out some 70s tunes so your guests can boogie down. Here are some additional ideas that will help you create a total disco atmosphere for your 70s party.
  • Set up a karaoke machine that's loaded with disco music. Kids can dance while everyone takes turns singing. Don't forget to video tape the show!
  • Dim the lights and hang a disco ball and tissue paper balls from the ceiling. You can light the room with black lights or twinkling lights to create a club atmosphere.
  • String colored lights in the shape of a square on the floor to create a dance floor. Buy the type of lights that can be adjusted to flash on and off or light up in a chasing pattern.
  • Place inflatable or bean bag chairs around the room.
  • Use vintage toys from the 70s as centerpieces such as Rock'em Sock'em robots, Etch-A-Sketch, a Barrel of Monkeys, Lite-Brite, Gumby and a Magic 8 Ball.
  • Tie balloons to vintage action figure characters from the 70s like Speed Racer, Scooby-Doo, GI Joe, Smurfs, Hello Kitty and Raggedy Ann and Andy.
  • Set out classic board games from the 70s including Chutes and Ladders, Chinese Checkers, Sorry!, Clue, and Twister. You can also set out marbles and jacks and then teach the kids how to play. Instructions for these games can be found at the bottom of this page.
  • Hang beaded curtains or crepe paper streamers from the party's entrance.
  • Set out a box of dress up clothes that include sunglasses, wigs, Afro style wigs, bell bottoms, and other 70s inspired clothing and accessories. You can also place disposable cameras on each party table so the kids can take photos of themselves dressed up!
70s Disco Party Food Ideas In addition to pizza, chicken fingers, hamburgers or hotdogs, you can add some Disco themed food into the mix. Here are some groovy suggestions.
  • Fondue: Use our fondue recipe to make cheese fondue for an appetizer and chocolate fondue for a dessert.
  • Pasta Primavera: Boil a large pot of lightly salted water and then add 8 ounces of dry pasta to the boiling water. Cook for 10 minutes and then drain. In a saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter and then mix in 1 packet of dry vegetable soup mix, 1-1/2 teaspoons of flour and 1-1/2 cups of milk. Bring this mixture to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Mix in 2 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese and then combine with the cooked pasta before serving.
  • Finger Food: Cut sandwiches into star, butterfly and daisy shapes using a cookie cutter. You can serve PB&J, grilled cheese or lunch meat.
  • Serve granola bars with dipping yogurt.
  • Hamburger Helper was first introduced in the 70s so you can serve this as well.
70s Disco Cake Idea Baking a 70s themed cake is easy! Simply bake 2 round cakes, frost between the layers and then decorate the top of the cake to look like a smiley face. On the face you can write "Have a Groovy, Far Out Birthday!" For an extra disco flare, bake this using our rainbow marble cake recipe.
