One of the first steps in party planning is deciding who to invite to the party. To keep your guest list manageable, consider inviting only your child’s closest friends from the neighborhood, a play group, or your child's school. When deciding on the exact number of friends to invite, keep in mind that the basic rule is to invite one friend for every year of your child’s life, plus one. The logic behind this rule is that one or both parents may attend the party with a younger child, and they may bring their other younger children. So, for a 3-year-old’s birthday, four friends may turn into twelve or more guests.
Once you've decided who to invite, it’s time to compose your guest list. For simplicity, you can record your invitees' names and phone numbers on a printed copy of the RSVP sheet below. Keep this list near the phone so you can record responses as people call to RSVP. One week before the party, call anyone who hasn't responded so you can get a final head count.
