What You'll Need:-
Face Paint in Assorted Colors
- Face Paint Brushes
- Clean-up Supplies (e.g. paper towels, water, makeup remover)
- Newspaper
Preparation:
Lay newspaper around the work area for easier clean-up, and set out your supplies. You may also want to draw a few clown face designs on a piece of paper to give the children some options from which to choose.
At The Party:
Ask each of the children to choose a clown face design that they would like painted on them. Below are traditional types of clowns from which they may choose. (Click each to see a larger picture.) You can use these pictures as references, but you may want to vary the designs since, traditionally, all clown faces at a circus are different.
You can expand this activity into a photo shoot by drawing a child-sized clown on a sheet or on cardboard. Use your child to determine the right height. Cut out the face, decorate the clown's body with a colorful costume, and then hang the sheet or cardboard from the ceiling or a doorway. After painting the children's faces, have them take turns putting their faces up to the hole in the hanging clown while you take pictures. These pictures will be great to send home with thank-you notes!

Auguste Clown: Usually a happy clown known for pranks and slapstick humor. The features are large and painted in red and black. White is often used to accent the eyes and mouth.

Whiteface Clown: This is the classic Pierrot harlequin clown. The face is white with red and black features which can be ordinary or exaggerated.

Character Clown: This is an exaggeration of the human face. It emphasizes warts, whiskers, freckles, etc. The hobo clown is a typical character clown.
