Preparation:
Before the party, mark two goal lines across from each other using string or masking tape. The goal lines should be fairly close together (i.e. no more than 20 feet apart). You may need to adjust the distance for the age of the children. Also, you can move the lines closer to each other if you find that the participants are getting too tired during the game.
How to Play:
At the party, pick one player to be the "octopus," and have this player stand in the middle of the "ocean" (i.e. the area between the two goal lines). The rest of the players are the "fish" and should line up behind one of the goal lines.
To start the game, the "octopus" yells, "Swim, fish!" All of the "fish" must then try to run across the "ocean" and past the opposing goal line without being tagged by the "octopus."
If the "octopus" tags a "fish," the "fish" becomes a "tentacle" during the next round. The "tentacles" and the "octopus" must hold hands and run together to catch "fish" during the next round.
Play continues until there is a chain of children trying to catch the last "fish."
Determining The Winner:
The last "fish" caught is the winner and is the "octopus" for the next game.
