Planning & Invitations
Your first decision is where to hold your karate party. If you’d rather not have the party at home, consider renting a nearby martial arts studio. Some studios may offer birthday packages that include an instructor to teach basic movements. For additional ideas, see our article on When & Where to Have the Party.
What do I need for the Party?
Basic party supplies include paper tableware, such as plates, napkins, cups, and cutlery, as well as a tablecloth, streamers, and balloons.
You can stick with the basics, or add other items to fit your theme. For example, for a Kung Fu Party, you may also want to consider renting or purchasing the following:
- A Martial Arts Movie, such as The Karate Kid (Rated PG), Kung Fu Panda (Rated PG), or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Rated PG)
- Martial Arts Uniforms and Headbands
- Punching Bag
- A Pinata
You may also want to consider hiring a martial arts instructor to give a demonstration during your party. The instructor can also teach your guests a few basic movies such as blocks and kicks.
To help you with your shopping, take a look at our Suggested Party Supply List. You may not need everything on the list, but you can use it as a guide. For additional party planning tips, our Party Planning 101 Guide includes cake ideas, party etiquette tips, a printable guest list, and more.
Karate Party Invitations
Invitations are an important part of your planning because they give the first impression of your party to your guests. If you have the time to make your own invitations, here are a few ideas to consider:
- Use a piece of heavy cardstock to make a “gi” (martial arts uniform shirt). Cut a V shape from the top of the cardstock to form the shirt shape. Use a hole punch to make a small hole on both sides of the shirt about halfway down, to serve as belt loops. Take a piece of black ribbon and thread it from the back through both of the holes, and tie it in a knot on the front of the shirt. Write your party details above the belt.
- Buy black fabric and cut it into strips that are about two inches thick and 12 inches long. Write your party details directly on the fabric in silver pen. Roll it up and send it in a padded envelope.
- Punch a hole in the corner of a card-style invitation and attach it to a martial arts headband. Ask your guests to wear their headbands to the party.
- Take a photo of your child in his martial arts uniform. Print the photo on the front of a top-fold card and write your party details inside.
- Include creative wording for your party details, such as:
Jump! Kick! Punch! Block!
[child’s name]’s birthday is gonna rock!
Come ready to have some fun,
You’ll earn your black belt before you’re done!
If you would rather not make your own invitations, but would still like a personalized touch, consider our Personalized Invitations, which include all the party details for you! We also offer blank invitations that you can fill in yourself.
Whichever invitation option you choose, seal your envelopes with martial arts stickers!
Decorating & Food Ideas
Martial Arts Party Decorations
Transform your party area into a martial arts dojo and let your guests feel like real sensei masters!
- Provide a simple martial arts uniform for each guest using large white adult T-shirts as the “gi” and black felt for the belts. While at the fabric store, look for fabric with an Asian design in red, white, and black. Use this to make headbands for each guest. You may be able to find dragon or tiger patches to iron onto the uniforms as well.
- Use red, white and black for your traditional decorations like streamers and balloons. Tie groups of three or four balloons together and tie them to the backs of chairs. Anchor them with balloon weights and set them near doorways or in the corners of the party area.
- Hang Chinese paper lanterns and even a paper dragon from the ceiling. Use additional lanterns as table decorations.
- Hang colored belts, in order of rank, on one wall of the party area. Typically, the rank goes as follows: white, yellow, green, blue, red, black.
- Hang a banner over the entranceway to the party that says, “Welcome to [child’s last name] Karate School”. Check out our personalized banners and let us do the work for you.
- Write each child’s name in large Japanese, Chinese, or Korean letters on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper. In smaller letters, write their name in English underneath. Laminate the papers and use them as placemats during snack time.
- Hang a pinata in the party area that can serve as a decoration before the activity begins. Remember any pinata can be transformed into a pull-string with our easy instructions.
Karate Party Food Ideas
When it comes to food, your guests would most likely be perfectly happy with pizza or hotdogs. However, if you would like to include some martial arts-inspired snacks, consider these ideas:
- Give your menu an Asian flair by serving mini egg rolls, chicken wings, and fortune cookies. If you are feeling especially creative, serve California rolls or other types of sushi. And don’t forget the chop sticks!
- The martial arts has a focus on health, so incorporate some healthy options into your selection, such as a veggie tray, fruit kabobs, and milk.
- Use a cookie cutter to make dragon-shaped sugar cookies and decorate them in red and black frosting. Use the same cookie cutter to cut out finger sandwiches as well.
- Hand out string cheese, licorice, fruit leather, and Nerds Rope®. Have your guests take turns holding the edges of these snacks for each other, so they can “karate chop” them before eating!
- Make edible nunchucks by inserting a licorice rope into the ends of two Twinkies.
- Make a cake in the shape of a “gi”. Bake a 9”x13” cake in any flavor and let cool. Remove from pan and place on a cake platter to decorate. First cut out a V shape from the middle of one end to create the shape of a uniform shirt. Cover the cake in white frosting and add a black belt across the middle in chocolate frosting.
Karate Party Favors
Put a smile on your guests’ faces by sending them home with party favors that fit your theme. You could give one large favor, such as a pair of foam nunchucks; or combine smaller favors such as ninja figurines, karate stickers, sports wristbands, and fortune cookies in a nice favor bag.
To save time, you may want to consider our Complete Favor Sets, which include matching favor bags. Or our popular personalized favors. Choose from bag tags, zipper pulls, magnets, buttons, and more, all personalized with your guests’ names or a personal message from you!
