Party Planning
For peace of mind, begin planning 6 - 8 weeks in advance to allow time to purchase and mail invitations, as well as to give your guests time to RSVP and make travel plans, if needed. Don't panic if you find yourself short on time; you can still plan a great party! Planning ahead simply reduces the risk of conflicts with guests' plans and may increase attendance.
To simplify the rest of the party planning process, check out our Party Planning Timeline, take a look at our When & Where to Have the Party page, and read the paragraphs below for information on selecting decorations, supplies, activities, and more for your child's party.
What Do I Need for the Party?
If you plan to use paper tableware and themed party supplies, our Suggested Party Supply List may be helpful when placing an order. Please note that you may not need everything on the list; it is intended only as a guide.
Decorating & Food Ideas
Fun Ideas To Set The Mood
- Set mounds of different sports balls and equipment around the party area. Place a wire basket or gym bag in the center of the party table, and fill it with sports balls and/or equipment, too.
- Hang pairs of high tops or cleats by their laces throughout the party area.
- Turn the party table into a sports field or court using markers or colored tape on top of a colored table cover. For example, you could place white "yard markers" on a green table cover to turn it into a football field, or create a basketball court by marking the free throw area over a pale yellow table cover.
- Hang sports posters around the party area.
- Tape trading cards and Sports Illustrated photos to the table cover.
- Hang color copies of skateboard and BMX bike logo stickers on the walls throughout the party area, or use enlarged copies as placemats.
Sporty Snacks
When it comes to food, partygoers are usually perfectly content to eat pizza or hotdogs, which is certainly much easier on the hosts! However, if you have the time and would like to serve up some sporty treats, consider these ideas:- Serve traditional ball park fare, including peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs, root beer, and/or lemonade.
- Make "All-Star Sandwiches" by using a cookie cutter to cut sandwich bread into star shapes.
- Serve drinks in sports bottles.
- Serve snacks in toy baseball or football helmets.
- Bake or buy a round cake, and then ice it to look like your child's favorite sports ball. If your child is more into extreme sports, such as skateboarding or BMX, you can turn a rectangular sheet cake into a skate park by adding peaks in the icing to create ramps. You could also place small toy bikes and skateboards on the cake.
