Planning & Invitations
One of your first decisions will be where to host your Butterfly Party. Hosting a party in your own backyard is a great option, as you have a little more freedom to be creative with your decorating and activity choices. However, many parents prefer to host the party elsewhere, so for a Butterfly theme, you may want to consider a park, a nature preserve, or a butterfly conservatory. For additional ideas, see our article on When and Where to Have the Party.
What do I need for the Party?
Basic party supplies include paper tableware, such as plates, napkins, cups, and cutlery; a tablecloth, streamers, and balloons. If you want to purchase themed tableware, instead of solids, consider our Butterfly Party Supplies.
You may also want to rent or purchase other items to fit your theme, such as:
To help you with your shopping, take a look at our Suggested Party Supply List. You may not need everything on the list, but you can use it as a guide.
Butterfly Birthday Invitations
Unique, homemade invitations can really get you in the party mood! If you have the time, here are a few ideas to consider:
- Cut a piece of pastel-colored cardstock into a butterfly shape. Decorate it with markers and glitter glue. Leave enough blank space in the middle of the card to write your party details in gold or silver pen.
- Take a picture of the birthday girl dressed up in butterfly wings. Print the photo onto one side of a piece of cardstock, so when you fold the card, the photo is on the front. Write your party details inside.
- Fold a piece of green cardstock in half to create a top-fold card. On the front, draw grass, flowers, bushes and trees. Paste butterfly stickers in the scene. Write your party details inside.
- Punch a hole in the corner of a card-style invitation, attach it to a Butterfly Net, and hand-deliver to your guests.
- Include creative wording for your party details, such as:
We’re having a party and you are invited,
We hope you can come, we’re all so excited!
It’s [child’s name]’s [age] birthday with a butterfly theme,
So flutter on over for cake and ice cream!
If you would rather not make your own invitations, but would still like a personalized touch, consider our Personalized Butterfly Invitations, which include the birthday child’s name and all the party details for you! We also offer blank invitations that you can fill in yourself.
Whichever invitation option you choose, seal your envelopes with Butterfly Stickers for a final, festive touch!
Decorating & Food Ideas
Butterfly Party Decorations
Keep the party fluttering along with decorations that fit your theme. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Hang tulle netting on the walls and ceiling of the party area. Hang mini butterflies and flowers (purchased at the craft store) on the netting.
- Balloons are a must at any party! Group together three to five helium balloons and anchor them with balloon weights around the party area. Add Butterfly Mylar balloons to some of your balloon groups for added effect.
- Hang a banner above the entrance to the party area that reads “Welcome to [child’s name]’s Butterfly Party!” Take a look at our Butterfly Banners for inspiration.
- Cut large butterfly shapes out of butcher paper and lay them on the ground leading up to the party entrance.
- Set out vases of silk or fresh flowers.
- Cut large flowers out of colorful felt or construction paper and tack them to the walls of the party area.
- If you have a ceiling fan in your party area, hang plastic or paper butterflies from each of the blades and turn the fan on low. The butterflies will fly above your party.
- Hang a Butterfly Pinata in the party area that can be used as a decoration before the activity begins. Remember, you can transform any pinata into a pull-string with these easy instructions.
Butterfly Party Food Ideas
Make your guests butterfly-themed party food so they have the energy to fly through the rest of the party!
- Serve butterfly bagels. Slice a bagel in half, and then slice the halves in half so you have four pieces. Lay two pieces back to back to form butterfly wings. Add cream cheese, sliced fruit, small candies, and other decorations to create a beautiful butterfly.
- Fill candy bowls with bright-colored M&Ms and Skittles.
- Cut peanut butter sandwiches, cheese slices, and deli meat with butterfly cookie cutters.
- Use toothpicks to stick grapes together in a straight line. Add two carrot slivers to one end to serve as antennae. Call these Caterpillar Snacks.
- Serve lemonade, juice, and water with flower-shaped silly straws.
- Serve a butterfly cake. Bake a 9” round cake. Cut the cake in half and turn the two pieces back to back so they resemble wings. Decorate with different colors of frosting to create a colorful butterfly.
- For young children, individual cupcakes may be more feasible than a full cake. For butterfly cupcakes, bake your favorite cupcake recipe and frost in white frosting. Lay a gummy worm on top and stick a vanilla wafer diagonally into the frosting on either side of the worm. Complete the butterfly look with a blueberry to serve as the head.

Send your guests home floating on a cloud with party favors that fit your theme. Give one large favor, such as a butterfly net or book on butterflies, or combine smaller favors such as bubbles, candles, binoculars, costume jewelry, and candy in a nice favor bag.
