At The Party:
Have the children sit in a circle on the floor. Set the stage for this game by telling your guests: "Real astronauts are tested for many important things before they're allowed to go into space. One thing astronauts need is a good memory, so let's see if everybody can remember what they brought to the moon!"
To begin the game, the first player (traditionally the birthday child) starts by saying, "I went to the Moon, and I took ___________," filling in the blank with an item that starts with the letter A. The second player must repeat what the first player said and add an item that begins with the letter B. Each subsequent player must recite the whole list of items, plus one starting with the next letter in the alphabet. This continues until a player cannot remember the whole list.
The last player to correctly repeat the whole list of items being taken to the moon wins the game. You may wish to write down each item on a notepad as the game progresses—sometimes the list can get very long!
Example:
- Player 1: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple."
- Player 2: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple and a balloon."
- Player 3: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, and a crayon."
- Player 4: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, a crayon, and a dragon."
- Player 5: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, a crayon, a dragon, and an elephant."
- Player 6: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, a crayon, a dragon, an elephant, and my father."
- Player 7: "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, a crayon, a dragon, an elephant, my father, and gold."
- Player 1 (again): "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, a crayon, a dragon, an elephant, my father, gold, and a harp."
- Player 2 (again): "I went to the moon, and I took an apple, a balloon, a crayon, a dragon, my father, gold, a harp, and ice cream."
Since player 2 left out "an elephant," the game is over and player 1 is the winner!
