What You'll Need:

  • 2 Very Large Cardboard Boxes (i.e. big enough for several kids to sit in at once)
  • 25 - 30 Soft, Small Balls (ping pong balls work best)
  • An X-Acto Knife or Scissors
  • Markers for Decorating (if desired)

Preparation:

Form two "ships" by cutting off one of the long, wide sides of each box. Decorate the ships by drawing on port holes and wooden boards, if desired.

At the Party:
  1. Position the ships about 10'–15' apart, divide the children into two "crews," and have each crew climb into its designated ship.
  2. Battles commence one crew at a time.
  3. Give a supply of "cannon balls" (i.e. the ping pong balls) to the first crew to launch an attack.
  4. When you say "Go," the attacking crew pelts the other ship with balls.
  5. A hit is scored if a ball lands in the body of the opposing ship (i.e. is not deflected by the crew).
  6. The defending crew may either deflect the balls, or they can catch them and throw them into the attacking crew's ship.
  7. However, they may not pick up balls out of their ship and throw them out.
  8. When the attacking team is out of ammo, tally the balls at the bottom of the opposing ship.
  9. Then it's the defending team's chance to retaliate!
  10. Play three or four rounds.
  11. Add the scores from all rounds. The crew with the fewest number of hits on its ship at the end of all rounds wins.
