Mardi Gras King Cake Recipe
The King Cake is a great tradition to add to your Mardi Gras party. Your guests will love the surprise of finding the plastic baby in their Mardi Gras party cake!
- 2 containers of crescent rolls (24 total rolls)
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup raisins soaked in hot water for 15 minutes, drained and dried with a paper towel
- 1/2 cup pecans
- White glaze icing
- Beads and a plastic baby (or fruit wedge)
- Colored sugar sprinkles in green, yellow and purple
- Preheat oven to 350F and cover a baking sheet in non stick baking spray.
- Blend cream cheese, brown sugar, cinnamon, and raisins in a food processor or large bowl. Add pecan halves and mix until pecans are chopped into 1/4 -inch pieces. Set aside.
- Unroll crescent dough onto the baking sheet and separate into triangles. Arrange the triangles into a circle with the points facing toward the middle of the circle. Overlap the edges of the dough to create an unbroken ring.
- Spread the cream cheese filling around the dough ring without going all the way to the edges.
- Place a small plastic baby somewhere in the filling. The guest who gets the piece with the baby in it will have good luck for the year! You may also use a dried bean or orange wedge in place of the baby.
- Fold the short edge of each triangle over the center of the filling. Fold the pointed end from the center of each triangle over top of the short edge to enclose the filling. Lightly press the seams together.
- Bake 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
- Once your cake is cooled to room temperature, ice with a glaze-consistency frosting and decorate with colored sugar, beads and gold coins. Use the colored sugar to make wide stripes of alternating colors around the cake.
Be sure to tell your guests to watch out for the plastic baby while they are eating! Choose a plastic toy that is large enough that it won't pose a choking hazard or use a large orange wedge instead.
