What You'll Need:

  • Metal Barrette Clasps (available at most craft stores)
  • Brightly Colored Balloons (un-inflated)
  • Shoelaces in Bright Colors (you'll need at least 2 or 3 per barrette)
  • Fishing Line or Thin Floral Wire
  • Squeeze-Bottle Fabric Paints (optional)

At the Party:

For Balloon Barrettes:
  1. Open the barrette.
  2. Knot a balloon around the barrette so that the ends of the balloon sit on top of the barrette.
  3. Continue knotting balloons in alternating colors around the barrette in this fashion until the barrette is completely covered.

For Shoelace Barrettes:
  1. Open the barrette.
  2. Tie the end of fishing line or wire to one side of the top of the barrette.
  3. Place one end of the shoelace on top of the barrette.
  4. Make a two inch loop and secure it at the base, wrapping fishing line or florist's wire tightly around the loop.
  5. Continue making loops and adding laces when necessary until the whole barrette is covered.
  6. If desired, guests can paint polka dots or other designs on the shoelaces with fabric paint.
