Masquerade balls date all the way back to the fifteenth century, when they were held to celebrate marriages and other events. Back then, they were considered very formal events, and served as a ceremonial costume party for the upper class. These celebrations then became more public events in sixteenth century Italy during the Renaissance and involved elaborate dances often associated with the Venetian Carnival.

While masquerade masks are usually associated with fun and partying nowadays, they were considered somewhat dangerous in eighteenth century Europe. If everybody in a large room is wearing a mask, then there is no way to identify all of the people at the party. So these "fun" masks can be used to the advantage of anyone wishing to do harm to another person and get away with it – say, an assassination attempt. You can throw a masquerade ball or Mardi Gras party with a lot of dancing and fun, or you can make it a scary Halloween party with tons of secrecy and murder – both sound exciting.
